Less than a month after he threatened to veto terrifying legislation that would cease constitutional rights as we know it, Obama has revoked his warning and plans to authorize a bill allowing indefinite detention and torture of Americans.
After passing in the House of Representatives earlier this year, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 went before the US Senate last week, where it was met with overwhelming approval. In the days before, the Obama administration issued a policy statement on November 17 saying explicitly that the president would veto the bill, as it would challenge “the president’s critical authorities to collect intelligence incapacitate dangerous terrorists and protect the nation.”
Opposition from the White House seemed all but rampant until RT revealed earlier this week that Senator Carl Levin told lawmakers that the legislation was altered because “the administration asked us to remove the language which says that US citizens and lawful residents would not be subject to this section.”
On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said that those last minute changes yielded legislation that would “not challenge the president’s ability to collect intelligence, incapacitate dangerous terrorists and protect the American people,” and therefore “the president’s senior advisers will not recommend a veto.”
Originally the White House said that the administration objected to matters in the bill that applied to detainees. Under the act, Americans could be arrested and held indefinitely in military-run prisons and tortured without charges ever being brought forth, essentially making Guantanamo Bay a threat for every American citizen.
Under the legislation, a literal police state will be installed over the United States. Republican Congressman Ron Paul said earlier this week that “this should be the biggest news going right now,” as the legislation would allow for  “literally legalizing martial law.”
“This step where they can literally arrest American citizens and put them away without trial….is arrogant and bold and dangerous,” said the congressman and potential Republican Party nominee for president.
In its threat of a veto last month, the White House said it had similar sentiments, writing in an official statement from Washington that The Administration strongly objects to the military custody provision of section 1032, which would appear to mandate military custody for a certain class of terrorism suspects.”
“This unnecessary, untested and legally controversial restriction of the President's authority to defend the Nation from terrorist threats would tie the hands of our intelligence and law enforcement professionals,” added the White House.“Moreover, applying this military custody requirement to individuals inside the United States, as some Members of Congress have suggested is their intention, would raise serious and unsettled legal questions and would be inconsistent with the fundamental American principle that our military does not patrol our streets.”
Despite Obama’s promise from last month, a veto seemed questionable after it was revealed that the bill, which approves the budget for the Department of Defense, came at a price tag much lower than the president had asked for.
It is expected to be in Obama’s hands anytime this week.

Russia has accused the United States of using “unjustified cruelty” against Occupy Wall Street protesters.
The Russian foreign ministry’s human rights envoy, Konstantin Dolgov, said most of theOccupy movement’s actions were “peaceful” and criticized the authorities for using undue violence against the protesters.
“As for the reaction of the authorities to these protest actions, including in the United States, we can point to the presence in it of elements of unjustified cruelty and in some cases of the disproportionate use of force,” Dolgov said in a statement on Tuesday.
“News channels regularly show scenes of violentdispersions by police of camps and peaceful demonstrations,
” he said. There have been dozens of reports of police violence since
the anti-greed movement began in September. In one particularly
shocking incident, a police officer shot pepper spray at protesting students at the University of California in November.
Last week, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin accused the United States of backing

anti-government protests in Moscow and other cities and said that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s comments on the elections had “given a signal” to the protesters.
Tens of thousands of people gathered near the Kremlin on Saturday to protest against alleged fraud at the December 4 parliamentary elections, which saw Putin’s ruling United Russia party just maintain its parliamentary majority.
Smaller rallies were also held in St. Petersburg and other cities.
Observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said the vote was “slanted in favor of the ruling party.”

Charlie Chaplin’s #Occupy Message (VIDEO)

 – 12/13/2011 AT 1:05 PM

I am an unapologetic admirer of Charlie Chaplin‘s work and politics. He was a comical and filmmaking genius, who was not fully appreciated until he was gone. His personal life and multiple marriages (and affairs) made headlines, and political complaints that he was a socialist and communist (sound familiar) eventually drove him from America and into exile in Switzerland.
One of Charlie’s greatest achievements is the the film The Great Dictator, a comedy and his first “talking picture.” Originally released in October 1940, the film, in which Chaplin wrote, produced, directed and starred in, openly criticized and ridiculed Adolph Hitler, Nazi oppression, and fascism. Until then, no one in Hollywood had dared to satirize Nazism or comment on the persecution of the Jewish people.
Chaplin plays duo roles in the film: the Jewish barber and the dictator Hynkel (Hitler). In the film’s climax, the barber assumes the identity of Hynkel and delivers a rousing and emotional speech, declaring democracy, free speech and a free society. He (the barber and Chaplin himself) calls for humanity in general to break free from dictatorships and use science and progress to make the world better instead.
“The clouds are lifting. The sun is breaking through. We are coming out of the darkness into the light. We are coming into a new world, a kindlier world, where men will rise above their hate, their greed and brutality. Look up, Hannah. The soul of man has been given wings, and at last he is beginning to fly. He is flying into the rainbow—into the light of hope, into the future, the glorious future that belongs to you, to me, and to all of us. Look up, Hannah. Look up”
It is no surprise that with the rise of the Occupy Wall Street movement, and the growing anger of the 99% over the rampant greed and disinformation that exists in our society, that someone would put Charlie’s poignant words fromThe Great Dictator to images from those things that plague mankind today. The words and theme of Chaplin’s speech ring as true today as they did then.
