Mitt Romney continues tooffend on nearly every conceivable level today with the revelation that he has adopted the Ku Klux Klan’s central tenant, “Keep America American,” as a rallying cry in his bid for the GOP’s presidential candidate.
Oh dear.
Americablog points out that Romney has used the KKK slogan repeatedly in recent weeks in campaign stops and political commercials.
“Keep America American” is apparently such an integral theme in KKK history that it appears in multiple books and media born out of the Klan’s history, including the damning Why You Should Become a Klansman: of Interest to White, Protestant, Native-born Americans Who Want to Keep America American.
Yes, that’s really the title. And yes, that is quite frankly a literal description of Mitt Romney.
Organized around the them of “Keep America American,” Klan activists murdered blacks and boycotted and destroyed Jewish businesses, while leaving their trademark, the burning cross, outside synagogues.
Admittedly, even as an American history major in college I was not well versed in KKK history, so Romney’s repeated usage of the Klan’s mantra was at first lost on me. But then again, I’m not a white, protestant politician running for office against an incumbent black president.
Mitt Romney is either grossly ignorant of his own campaign slogan’s legacy of racism, murder and hate, or courting the bigoted evangelical vote with deplorable cunning.
Either way, would you want this man to be your president?
